Approach

I start each workshop with an introduction to how I work within the realm of writing for wellbeing– of how we will work together as a group in a safe and open space. I differentiate between writing for wellbeing (for self) and writing for publication (for audience), always stressing process over product, empathy and lack of judgment over critique, the invitation to share and the invitation to pass, and playful curiosity toward self and others. We warm up with short bursts of expressive writing; we read and discuss (in a non-literary way) some carefully chosen poetry or other text or object; and we make our way through a series of longer prompts, sharing and reflecting all along, with different outcomes depending on the workshop.

“Alison proposes a writing experience which works just as well for a seasoned writer as it does for a beginner. Her exercises are uniquely tuned to take away inhibitions and provide participants with the confidence they need to express themselves freely. I found the writing that emerged could be as surprising as it was effective. Alison’s natural empathy immediately makes everyone feel comfortable. It’s about harmony; she creates a little circle of concord. She provides the wings we need to fly. And we do!” -JS

Before moving to London, I taught in the English Departments of several universities in the United States. Teaching academic writing and introduction to literature in a traditional academic setting, I always favoured discussion over lecture and welcomed students’ thoughts, ideas, and autonomy over their own learning.
